Infrastructure

Mongolia has a large territory which is the world’s 19th largest. However, the country has only little over 3 million people living across this vast territory making Mongolia one of the least densely populated areas in the world. Therefore, infrastructure plays naturally vital role in everyday life of the people of Mongolia and provision of basic services.

Additionally, infrastructure is the key in developing major deposits discovered in Mongolia. Inadequate infrastructure has long been the bottleneck in production and transportation of minerals at its highest capacity.

As the prerequisite for development of major projects in Mongolia, infrastructure is one of the sectors which requires most capital investment. Over the last 5 years, significant amount of financing has been allocated to infrastructure development by the Government of Mongolia and by the private parties. As a result, new railway line in route Ukhaakhudag-Gashuunsukhait in order to enable the Tavan Tolgoi coking coal mine to access international markets via railway has been under construction. Several other rail projects are under project development stage. Moreover, since 2012, total of 3405 km paved road have been built. Also, modernization of air fleet of national flag carrier, MIAT, is underway. New international airport of Ulaanbaatar with significantly expanded capacity is expected to be commissioned in 2017.

Our notable infrastructure experience includes Mongolian Railways JSC in development of New railway project and construction of Ukhaakhudag-Gashuunsukhait railway of 245 km. We also advise our clients on regular basis in infrastructure related transactions, including road concession and aircraft financing.
